Welcome to MONK!
Weekly practical philosophy essays and podcasts to help you get a black belt in thinking
In Martial arts, you train your body for a fight.
In Ancient philosophy, you trained your mind for life.
Monk is all about philosophy as a martial art for the mind:
Teaching you how to think, not what to think.
How to think better, to feel better.
Mastering your perception, to overcome illusion and live a good life.
Our minds in the modern world are under siege; addictions, false beliefs, catastrophes, narratives, drink, drugs, take-aways, PlayStations, Xbox’s, pornography, Youtube, Instagram, Facebook, Discord, Snap-chat, smartphones, all threaten to spin us out of control, and limit our autonomy as individuals; to take away our freedom.
Monk is all about giving that freedom back, and week by week, through essays and podcasts, teaching you a martial arts of the mind to defend against these modern vices and maintain your agency and sovereignty in chaotic times.
Who am I?
My name is Mahon. I am an Irish Writer, Award-winning Playwright, Philosophy doctoral researcher, Martial arts coach, Black belt, and Podcast host.
As my Dad would say, I have followed the martial and literary arts with balanced determination. Mastering writing and fighting and studying ancient stoic philosophy with some of the modern leaders of the practice like Donald Robertson, John Vervaeke and Dr John Sellars.
My BA is in Philosophy and Economics and my Master’s is in Creative Writing from Queen’s University Belfast. My plays have been performed in the Lyric Theatre, Rua Red Gallery and selected for the Dublin Fringe Festival. Studying martial arts since the age of two (no joke), I have a black belt in Bujinkan Ninjitsu and have been a fighter and coach in traditional Muay Thai and Western Boxing.
Day to day, I am a Philosophy Doctoral Researcher in Ethics and New Technologies. I won DCU’s 2022 School of Theology and Philosophy Scholarship to study the ethical issues of Social Media Companies monetising users' attention, and am currently completing my PhD. By night, I talk about deep personal development on my podcast, with thousands of listeners and a show that has frequently been top ten self-improvement and education in Ireland.
My aim is to help you master your mind and defend against the tendrils of influence in the modern world that would take away your freedom, character and potential.
This mission takes me through many topics, philosophy, psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, religion, spirituality, martial arts, and where ever else I can get the gold to help arm you in your fight for individual sovereignty.
